Communities around Chome Irrigation Scheme in Phalombe District are breathing a new lease of life, following the rehabilitation of the watering system.
In group village head Mukhwayi under Traditional Authority Jenala, the scheme also serves people of Gunda, Mukhwayi, Lyson, Lingazi, Katsonya, Namalawe, Sigoti, Kotamu and Magonera villages.
The communities are now able to buy cheap farm produce, including vegetables, tomatoes, rice, okra and green maize.

At least 534 farmers are benefiting from the rehabilitation works, which involved drilling of a borehole, installation of two additional water tanks of 10 000 litres, solar pumping units, solar panels with accessories and fencing the compound, as well as installing conveyance pipelines and infield hydraulic structures (distribution boxes) under RCRP-2 to the tune of about K180 million.
